The Digital Twin as a Form of Postmodern Identity:

Between Simulation and Authenticity

Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of a digital twin as a form of identity specific to postmodern culture. It is shown that the postmodern deconstruction of the unified subject finds its logical continuation in the digital environment: identity crumbles into a multiplicity of situationally activated digital facades, constructing of which is mediated by the platforms algorithmic infrastructure. Drawing on J. Baudrillard’s simulacrum concept and E. Goffman’s theory of performative identity, we demonstrate that a digital twin is a model that does not reflect but shapes its presumable original. Central attention is paid to the paradox of authenticity: a culture that has deconstructed the idea of a single genuine Me simultaneously exhibits a growing demand for a verifiable reliability of the digital manifestations of personhood. The resolution of the paradox is linked to a shift of the concept of authenticity from the ontological (fidelity to the inner Me) to the procedural (correspondence to a declared source). The instance of conversational AI assistants is examined separately as a limiting case of digital quasi-personhood that has no human prototype from the outset.
