Abstract. The article explores the philosophical distinction between art and the artificial in the context of phenomenology and ontology. The relevance of the topic stems from the increasing immersion of humans in the artificial world, in which the boundary between the authentic and the illusory is becoming increasingly indistinct. The study aims to substantiate an ontological criterion for distinguishing art from the artificial. Based on a comparison of the concepts of M. Heidegger (the unconcealment) and H. Sedlmayr (the middle), the paper demonstrates that an authentic work of art is neither an object nor a thing, but an event of presence, actualized in the act of recreation and requiring the holistic participation of a human. Drawing on the phenomenology of the living body (Leib) as interpreted by E. Husserl, M. Merleau‑Ponty, and G. Schmitz, the author interprets pre‑reflective resonance as a criterion of authenticity. The artificial is interpreted as an alienated thing, devoid of any connection with being, existing solely in the mode of consumption. The novelty of the approach lies in the interpretation of Leib as an ontological criterion for distinguishing between art and the artificial. The article concludes that the distinction between art and the artificial does not lie in the material or content, but in the mode of presence.
