Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the British assessment of the USSR’s foreign policy course in the first months after the death of I.V. Stalin (spring 1953). The work attempts to clarify the understanding of the mechanisms of Western policy shaping during the transitional period of the Cold War. The author explores the specific ways, in which British political and diplomatic circles perceived the changes in the Soviet leadership focusing on the discrepancy between W. Churchill’s initiative to establish a dialogue with the new Soviet leadership and the more cautious, pragmatic stance of the Foreign Office. Drawing on the documents, the paper reconstructs the position of the British foreign policy department: interpretation of Moscow’s conciliatory steps as a tactical one rather than a strategic change; assessment for the motives of the Soviet leadership through the lens of its need for an “internal respite”; correlation of the USSR’s rhetoric softening to the risk of a split in the Western bloc. It is concluded that British diplomacy was dominated by an approach that combined a willingness to engage in limited negotiations on particular issues (for example, ending the conflict in Korea, the German issue) with the need to preserve and strengthen the defensive potential of the West.
