Abstract. The article examines a diplomatic battle connected with remilitarization of the Rhineland by Nazi Germany. On the basis of documents of National Archives in London, the author analyses the positions of European powers and their reaction to the challenging action of the leadership of the Third Reich. Archival materials show that this Hitler’s action was highly risky, since the Western powers had sufficient military potential to fight back against the Nazis and to prevent the remilitarization of the Rhineland zone. But they did not do so due to a series of reasons connected with the policy of appeasement and the wish of the ruling circles of Great Britain and France to come to terms with Hitler, thereby avoiding involvement in war. The article analyses consequences of the remilitarization of the Rhineland, reaction of European powers, and the impact of this action on peace and security in Europe.
