Abstract. The article elucidates the specificity of the phenomenological approach to the analysis of photography as a cultural and philosophical phenomenon. Drawing on key concepts (E.O. Krank, R. Barthes, J. Derrida, E. Fischer, L.S. Purcell, et al.), the study demonstrates how phenomenology shifts the focus from the attributive properties of the photograph to the perceptual and existential experience of the viewer, thereby revealing the ontological and epistemological significance of the photographic image. Particular attention is paid to the critique of the eidetic model of phenomenology and to the prospects for its development within existential and hermeneutic phenomenology. The article also analyses manifestations of the phenomenological optics in the representation of the tragic and in the functioning of photography in the digital environment. In conclusion, it substantiates the need for a comprehensive approach that takes into account the material, technological, and sociocultural dimensions of the photography functioning.
