Abstract. This article examines the evolution of the ontological understanding of the concept of fear in the history of Western philosophy, from Aristotle to Søren Kierkegaard. It traces the transition from the ancient understanding of fear as a negative affect (exemplified by Aristotle, Epicurus, and Seneca) to the Christian concept of the “Fear of God” in the theological teaching of St. Augustine, where fear is for the first time conceptualized as a special experience that allows for the recognition of the ontological gap between the human and the Divine essence. Particular attention is paid to Hegel’s interpretation of fear (Furcht) in the context of the dialectic of slave and master. A key stage of the study is the analysis of the concept of fear (Angst) in the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard, where fear is regarded as a fundamental experience postulating the nature of the human essence in such a way that the human being is defined not as a “social animal” or a “rational animal,” but as a “fearful being”.
